On October 12, the Arts Research Center at UC Berkeley and the Curatorial Practice at the California College of the Arts are partnering to host a live-streaming of the Creative Time Summit, an annual conference in New York that brings together cultural producers--including artists, critics, writers, and curators--to discuss how their work engages pressing issues affecting our world. To jump-start the conversation in advance of the event, attendees have been asked to submit a paragraph on a keyword associated with one of the summit themes: Inequities, Occupations, Making, or Tactics. This posting is by Shanthi Shanmugam, American Cyberculture student at UC Berkeley.
Keyword: Making
The term I would like to explore is "Making". What does is it mean to make and to be made? Creation is very subtle because every action induces or "makes" another reaction. Essentially, our universe is a dynamic system of action/reaction processes that lend to the creation of each other. Another way to explore the sense of the word "making" is to glance at its relative antonym, "destructing". To destruct something, we essentially assume it was structured, constructed, or made in the first place but have adequate incentive to reverse the process. However, is this really a reversal or just another creation?
